The Cash Register was invented by James Ritty in 1879. Before this, cash was kept many times in nothing more than an old cigar box. In Ritty's time, theft by clerks was a way of life, and shopkeepers had little defense against employee dishonesty. So out of necessity Ritty invented the cash register. He sold only one machine to John Patterson, and this led to the beginning of the giant enterprise known as "The National Cash Register Company" The cash register eliminated two of the most pressing problems for early merchants. First, it provided a receipt for the customer and eliminated disputes over how much was charged. Secondly, it kept track of the sales for the day, and this greatly curbed employee theft. Today, modern electronics have taken over and the old cash register shown in the above photo has become a relic of Times Gone By...
