People over the thousands of years, used objects to remove wrinkles from clothing, but the iron that most of
us would recognize as an iron first appeared in Europe by the 1300s. The flatiron as shown above is very
similar to the old irons of the distant past, and is comprised of a flat piece of iron with a metal handle attached
to it. Heating the iron required one to hold it over a fire until it was hot.  To avoid getting burned while
working, a padded cloth would be used to wrap around the handle. Another problem was getting soot on the
finished product. To avoid this, another thin cloth would be placed between the garment and the iron so that
black soot would not be transferred to the clothing being ironed. The above tool would be used until it was
too cool to do its job. Many people owned several flatirons so they could heat one or more while one was
being used.
