This weathered ice house located near Bishop, California reminds us of times gone by. Before the invention
of the refrigerator, ice was most often wrapped in straw, and stored in structures like the one above, or in
underground chambers. Ice was big business years ago, and was in great demand during the summer months.
Most likely ice from the nearby Sierra Nevada Mountains was used to stock this particular ice house, and
straw as mentioned above, was used to insulate against the heat of the summer months. This method worked
well, and by the time the ice began to melt in earnest, the winter months were nearly back in full swing.
Though ice was and is still is a great preservative that enables us to preserve food and other substances that
life depends on, the ultimate preservative comes from a different source.
Psalm 36:6-7
Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the great deep. O LORD, you preserve both
man and beast. How priceless is your unfailing love! (NIV)
