The Phonograph
- was the best known device for playing back recorded sound from 1870 - 1980. Thomas Edison was the inventor of this marvelous machine, and it soon evolved into a more elaborate device as shown above. The flat discs that were used to record sound became known as records. Because of this, it became more fondly known as the "Record Player." I had several of these so called Record Players during my life, and they were certainly a source of great entertainment. From story telling to symphonic music, the Record Player was the instrument of choice when it came to listening pleasure. Today, the DVD, CD, and even more so, digital streaming have taken over this duty causing the old time phonograph to temporaraly slip into the realm of Times Gone By, because by 2005 vinyl records represented only 0.2% of total sales for that format. But I say temporarily, only because as of recent times, records, along with the phonograph have made a comeback due to nostalgia, digital burnout (some folks believe they actually sound superior), collectability (due to many cool record jackets), and other factors. So sometimes the things of Times Gone By, make a return to the here and now!
