The One Room School was common in America in the 1800's. Usually there was one of these small school buildings in each township. Teachers were often former students and were considered very special people. During the winter months they would get to the school early and get a fire started in a wood burning device (like the one shown above) so the school room would be warm by the time the students arrived. Many times the teacher would prepare a hot meal on top of the stove. Students of all ages were combined in this single classroom, and often the older students would help the younger. This was a great model for children to learn to relate to other children of all ages. In 1782, the United States Assembled in Congress (Continental Congress) and voted funds to publish the first American Bible. From there, it didn't take long for God's word to find it's way into the schools. The Bible's ability to teach children lasting values was well recognized by the community in those days. Unfortunately, the Bible has been banned in our public schools and has become a part of Times Gone By, and sadly, we are seeing the result of all this in our society today.

Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along
the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Deuteronomy 11:18-19
